our new 40th Premier

Steven John Miles, born on November 15, 1977, is an Australian politician who is set to become the 40th Premier of Queensland, Australia[1][4]. He has been serving as the Deputy Premier of Queensland since May 2020 and has been a Labor member for Murrumba in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2017[1]. Prior to this, he represented Mount Coot-tha from 2015 to 2017[1].

Miles' political career began when he unsuccessfully ran for the Federal seat of Ryan in 2010[7]. He later became a senior policy advisor to the Queensland Treasurer and Deputy Premier on Trade and Economic Development matters[7]. He was elected in the 2015 state election and was sworn in as Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef in the First Palaszczuk Ministry[1]. After winning re-election in 2017, he was promoted to Health Minister[6].

In 2020, he became the Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development[7]. His responsibilities have also included Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and assisting the Premier on Olympic and Paralympic Games Infrastructure[2][11].

Miles' ascension to the position of Premier comes after a deal was struck between his camp, which is made up of United Workers Union MPs, and Cameron Dick's Right faction[4]. As a result of this agreement, Cameron Dick is set to become the Deputy Premier[4]. This leadership change comes ahead of Queensland's state election in October 2024[4].

As Premier, Miles' priorities are expected to include health, housing, cost of living, the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, infrastructure, and energy[2]. He has been actively involved in managing the state's health response and has been endorsed by the current Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, for the top job[5].

Miles has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Queensland[1][7]. His PhD thesis was on Union Renewal[1]. Prior to his election, Miles ran a local small business and has three young children[1]. He also worked for the prominent Public Sector Union Together in Queensland, formally known as the QPSU, as an Industrial Relations Director and lead Organiser for several years[1].

Miles' political views and policies are largely influenced by his background as a union official and communications professional. He has been a longstanding advocate for various social and labor-related causes[1]. As the incoming Premier of Queensland, his leadership will likely continue to reflect these values and priorities.
